Abstract

Introduction: Functional mobility describes the individual's ability to move independently². Cognitive status may change with age, and may be influenced by educational level, its decrease may lead to worsening of functional mobility and consequently lead to adverse effects such as falls3. Assessing the correlation between cognitive status and functional mobility at different levels of schooling is important for prevention and rehabilitation of functional declines. Objective: To investigate the correlation between functional mobility and cognitive status in community aged individuals at different levels of schooling. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with 27 elderly people divided into G1 (low and medium schooling) and G2 (high schooling). Cognitive status was assessed using the Mental State Mini-Exam and functional mobility through the Timed Up and Go tests, Five-Step Sit and Go Test and Walk Speed Test. Pearson's correlation was used to establish the relation between variables, being considered statistically significant when p <0.05. Results: The sample consisted of 9 men (33.3%) and 18 women (66.6%) aged 71.29 ± 6.84 years, 22 (81.4%) had low and medium schooling and 5 (18.5%) high schooling. Statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between variables. Conclusion: No correlation was found between functional mobility and cognitive status. This result is attributed to the fact that the population studied had a good level of schooling and did not present major changes in functional mobility.
