Abstract

Introduction: Functional limitations and gait changes can be minimized with the use of assistive devices. Its correct prescription, respecting the individuality of the user is essential for a good physical performance. Objective: To evaluate spatial-temporal and deviations in gait parameters at normal and fast speed, in two moments: one, with the device showing the usual measures, and in the second moment, with the device adapted with the specific height and angulation of the volunteer. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study. A questionnaire containing general and specific information about the assistive device (AD) and its use was applied. The evaluation of the spatial-temporal and deviations of the gait parameters was done in the normal and fast speed. Results: A total of 36 individuals (mean age 59 years, 64% men) with different diagnosis completed the proposed tests; 31% of the AD users showed the incorrect height of the device. A significant difference was observed between the greater trochanter measurements and the wrist fold to the ground (p <0.001); 61% did not receive instruction or training to use AD; 55% of walking stick users used the device on the contralateral side of the injury. No significant differences in gait spatial-temporal parameters were identified, nor even differences in hip symmetry. Conclusion: The results presented provide relevant information to professionals and users about the use of AD and its correct prescription. According to the spatial-temporal evaluations only to correct the height of the AD as recommended by the literature, was not enough for a significant improvement of its parameters.
