Introduction: The majority of people with dementia have progressive cognitive decline associated with the manifestation of non-cognitive symptoms, also known as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. Objective: To map nursing care for the prevention and management of behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia. Method: This is a scoping review, a research protocol registered with the Open Science Framework and based on the recommendations of the international guide Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews and the method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The guiding question was developed using the Population, Concept and Context strategy. Results: 46 studies were included. The most prevalent types of nursing care were: individualized person-centered care, guidance on caregiver approaches in general care contexts, effective communication, multicomponent interventions, systematic recording and monitoring of symptoms, environmental modifications, sensory/multisensory stimulation interventions, team training, caregiver training and support, and support from the multiprofessional team. Conclusion: There is a wide variety of nursing care for the prevention and management of behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia, which makes this review a tool for designing person-centered care plans in different settings.
