Health education for people with intestinal stoma: integrative review

Abstract

Objective: to understand national and international scientific production about health education for people with stoma. Methodology: This is an integrative review, using the databases Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and IBECS via the Virtual Health Library (VHL), PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science and Embase. The Health Science Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were used as “Enterostomal therapy”, “surgical stomas”, “nursing”, “health education”, “self care” in Portuguese, English and Spanish with time frame from 2019 to 2024, totaling seven articles included. Results: From the analysis of the material, two categories emerged: strategies used to promote health education for people with a stoma and perceived difficulties in promoting health education. Conclusion: Health education for stoma patients is essential and can be carried out with the help of technologies, such as: applications, software and the availability of reliable websites and videos. It is also important that health professionals receive training on stoma so that promote quality health education.
