In this article, the authors consider the problems identified in the course of the practical activities of the preliminary investigation bodies on the application of criminal procedure legislation in assessing property damage caused by a crime. The authors present methods for assessing property damage caused by a crime, as well as measures of control by the heads of the preliminary investigation bodies aimed at improving the activities of employees, departments headed by them to establish the nature, cost and amount of property damage caused by crimes
